Ajay Devgn was reportedly the first choice to play the lead role in Akshay Kumar starrer Laxmii
Before Akshay Kumar, there were reports of Ajay Devgn starring in the Hindi remake of Kanchana titled Laxmii, backed by Tusshar Kapoor and helmed by Raghava Lawrence.
- Back in 2014, there were strong reports of Ajay Devgn starring in Kanchana remake
- Later, it was reported that things didn’t fall in place with the superstar
- Six years later, Kanchana is remade with Akshay Kumar and the title is Laxmii
Akshay Kumar starrer Laxmii, which was previously titled Laxmmi Bomb, is a Hindi remake of 2011 Tamil film Muni 2: Kanchana. While Akshay Kumar is already making waves on social media in a saree-clad avatar even before the film’s release, not many may remember but he wasn’t the first choice to play the lead role.
Back in 2013, it was reported that Salman Khan was interested in doing the Hindi remake but things didn’t fall in place. Later, Ajay Devgn came on board and the reports of him starring the film were quite strong. In fact, Tusshar Kapoor, who is the co-producer of Laxmii had bought the rights back in 2014 and the movie was to go on floors with Ajay Devgn in the lead.
Before Tusshar came on board as the producer, it was reported that Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be producing the film. However, Raghavan Lawrence was always on board to helm the Hindi remake. A source had told Bangalore Mirror, “Kanchana’s Hindi version was to go on floors last year originally with Salman Khan as he had shown keen interest in the subject. Later, Ajay evinced interest in the same, but his schedule and lack of confidence among producers had put the project on the backburner. But now Ajay is reviving the project and Lawrence received a call from a top producer recently to fine-tune the script.”
Regarding Ajay’s casting, the source had further added, “Some casting agents wonder if such a role would suit a mass actor like Ajay. Consequently, there will be at least 30 per cent variation in the storyline.”
“The final script will be presented to Ajay for review. The star cast will be decided only after Ajay gives the go-ahead for the revised,” signed off the source.
But, a couple of months later, it was reported that Ajay Devgn had refused to don a saree for the film. A report in India Today had claimed that Ajay was to star in Tusshar Kapoor and Shabina Khan’s Kanchana’s Hindi remake. The film was supposed to go on floors from October 2014 but Ajay is not keen on wearing a saree. A source had added that Ajay has, however, agreed to wear a more faminine attire but not a saree.
