Water rises in Jamuna, sparks fear of another flood among Sirajganj dwellers

Water levels in the river Jamuna have started rising again at different points in Sirajganj district due to unremitting onrush of hilly water from the upstream.

The rising water levels have sparked fear about another flood among the inhabitants of Sirajganj district.

“The water level has risen 33cm in the last 24 hours at Hard Point area near Sirajganj flood protection embankment and is flowing 18cm below the danger level,” said Sirajganj Water Development Board on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, locals have expressed the apprehension that a vast swathe of river bank areas are likely to be flooded again. River erosion has also started. Erosion by the river has taken a serious turn at Kazipur, Enayetpur and Chouhali. Locals are fearing that hundreds of homesteads and large areas of cropland are likely to be devoured by the river.

However, the Water Development Board (WDB) said they have undertaken two projects for checking the river erosion. Work would start once the for the projects are received.

According to the WDB office in Sirajganj, water levels in the river Jamuna recorded 13.17cm at Sirajganj point on Friday morning, which was 12.84cm on Thursday morning. The water is flowing just 18cm below the danger level.

Sirajganj Water Development Board Divisional Deputy Engineer AKM Rafiqul Islam said the water in the river Jamuna is rising.

Quoting the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, he said the water would continue to rise over the next 48 hours.

Sirajganj Water Development Board’s executive engineer Shafiqul Islam said this year’s flood is a lengthy one. Water in the river Jamuna started rising since the first week of May. Now, the water is rising again. However, there is no possibility of floods.
