Thousands of Rohingya women, some of whom were raped during a military crackdown in Myanmar’s Rakhine State in August last year, are due to give birth.

More than 700,000 majority-Muslim Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh.

They now live in squalid and overcrowded refugee camps and relief organisations are working with communities to make certain rape victims and their children do not face discrimination.

The United States indicated more action from the international community over Rohingya issue.

“I believe it’s ethnic cleansing of a religious minority that’s taking place,” said US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback.

The special envoy Brownback also made a particular mention of the fate of Myanmar’s Rohingya — a Muslim minority group that he said faced the “ethnic cleansing of a religious minority.”

“I don’t think you’ve seen progress taking place there in the country. If anything, the administration there is doubling now its effort,” he said of Myanmar’s authorities.
