Keep alternative drivers in long-distance vehicles: PM Sheikh Hasina

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has given several directives to the authorities concerned of different transportation in order to prevent road accidents.
The directives came soon after five construction workers were killed in a road accident in Tangail on Monday, taking the death toll to over 55 in the recent road crashes.
She instructed the authorities concerned that all long-distance vehicles should keep an alternative driver and no driver should ply his vehicle on the highways to five hours at a stretch.
She also asked for keeping arrangements of restroom and
service-centers in a specific distance on the highways to avert unwanted road accidents.
The PM while addressing the regular cabinet meeting, asked the persons concerned to stop abrupt road crossing of the
pedestrians and make the signaling system effective.
Quoting the PM, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam said sterner actions will be taken against those who cross roads violating traffic rules.
She also asked the home minister, road transport and bridges minister and the shipping minister to hold meetings regularly on the traffic safety issues, Shafiul Alam added.
