If released in 2020, Yash Chopra’s 1997 Dil To Pagal Hai, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor in the lead roles, would have been a Rs 283-crore grosser.
Yash Chopra’s Dil To Pagal Hai, released in 1997, is one of the most loved Hindi films of all time. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor, the film is adored even today for its relatable storyline and endearing performances. Its music, too, had played a significant role in its massive success. Right from its title track to Arre Re Arre to Chand Ne Kuch Kaha, each and every song of its soundtrack was an absolute winner.
The Yash Raj Films production had emerged a blockbuster at the box office. It had taken an opening of almost Rs 1 crore. By the end of its first weekend, it had collected Rs 2.75 crore. In its lifetime, the film had made a handsome Rs 34.97 crore. After adjusting inflation, the lifetime collection of the film would amount to a staggering Rs 283 crore. And believe us or not, the film had managed to deliver this performance by only releasing on 245 screens. Because 23 years ago, the cinema culture was in its nascent stage and there were a few theatres across the country.
Surprising, as it may sound, none of the Shah Rukh Khan films have ever touched the inflation-adjusted figure of Dil To Pagal Hai, which goes on to show that his biggest successes came in the initial years of his illustrious film career. The highest-grossing film of the superstar is the Rohit Shetty-directed Chennai Express, which had released in 2013. The romantic comedy had collected over Rs 227 crore in its lifetime run at the box office.
However, SRK’s upcoming films – none of them officially confirmed though – show a lot of promise. Be it Atlee’s actioner or Siddharth Anand’s Pathan or social comedy with Rajkumar Hirani, or for that matter, Raj & DK’s next, the superstar has signed some of the most exciting projects. Will he be able to surpass his own big successes? Let’s wait and watch!
