Several showbiz stars, including Bollywood actresses like Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Vidya Balan have spoken about being paid less than their male counterparts. Even Hollywood stars like Natalie Portman, Angelina Jolie and Meryl Streep have opened up about pay disparity in the industry. However, television actress Tejasswi Prakash feels that the pay gap ‘changes according to how better you are at your job.’
In a recent interview, on the theme of International Women’s Day, the Naagin 6 actress and Bigg Boss 15 winner shared her views on body shaming, people going under the knife and more. But it was her take on the gender pay gap that left us rather shocked. When asked about her opinion on pay disparity in the industry, Tejasswi Prakash said that she has been paid more than the lead actor for almost all her shows. The TV actress said that she believes that the system cannot be blamed for this as it depends on how good someone is at their jobs.
“From my personal experience, whatever work I’ve done so far, whichever daily soap I’ve done touchwood I’ve been paid more than the lead actor. I feel it changes according to how better you are at your job. If you’re good at your job they will pay you whatever it takes to get you on board. Like in my case I’ve had heroes, co-actors all my life since I started working. Every show that I’ve done except for two shows I’ve done eight or nine in total, I was paid more than the hero. That’s because they wanted me. I don’t think you can blame the system saying he’s being paid more only because he’s a guy, no,” she told Etimes.
