BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged the government to step down and hand over the power to people by holding a fair election.
“The bell of Awami League’s downfall has begun to toll. I urge the government to resign. Hand over the power to people through a fair election under a new Election Commission,” said Fakhrul addressing at a rally in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Friday.
Dhaka City North unit BNP organized the rally against load shedding and mismanagement in the energy sector.
Alleging that the government has looted thousands of crores of taka in the name of electricity, BNP secretary general said, “The country lost Tk 28,000 crore in power sector in 2021. Many companies, which are closely associated with Sheikh Hasina, looted thousands of crores of taka without generating electricity.”
He further said, “Quick rental power plants were built to import power. Those power plants were conducted without any tender.
Thousands of crores of taka have been looted through these plants. They (government) made Indemnity Act in a bid for not to book those plants under justice.”
“There’s a now crisis of power and then we’ll face the shortage of fuel oil. After that, you’ll see the reserves are running out,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
Mentioning that BNP’s one-point demand is the resignation of the government, Fakhrul said, “Dissolve the parliament by handing over power to a caretaker government. Give the power back in the hands of the people through an acceptable election.”
Fakhrul said that people of Bangladesh are dying every day either in road accidents or because of the torture of Awami League. People are being killed, he added.
Urging the party leaders and activists, the BNP secretary general said, “Wake up as we have no more time in our hands. We must oust this fascist and corrupt regime.”
He said, “This government has made Bangladesh a failed state. So they cannot be given another chance.”
