The Academy Award fraternity today released the list of 366 feature films that are eligible for Oscars winning and we could not be happier to share with you the Indian flicks that have been shortlisted this year. First off, you must know that the Oscars are all set to premiere on April 25, 2021. Last year, South Korean dark comedy Parasite, took up all the top spots including the Best Picture category.
Coming to the Indian films that are eligible for this year, we have Priyanka Chopra and Rajkummar Rao starrer The White Tiger. The movie released on the OTT platform Netflix and is based on Aravind Adiga’s novel by the same name.
Apart from book to movie adaptation, Tamil-language drama Soorarai Pottru starring celebrated South actor Suriya Sivakumar is also in contention for the Oscars along with Kalira Atita. For the unaware, Kalira Atita is an Odia-language film helmed by Nila Madhva Panda.
While these Indian films are in the run for Oscars 2021, one must know that the official nominations of the Academy Awards will be released on March 15, 2021. All one can do now is sit with crossed fingers and wait for either of these films to bring India the big win!
Christopher Nolan’s Tenet starring Indian actress Dimple Kapadia is also eligible for nomination. The three shortlisted films will be up against contenders like The Trial Of The Chicago 7, animated film Soul, Apocalypse ’45, Underneath The Same Moon, Circus of Books, Malcolm & Marie, Sound Of Metal amongst others.
Coming to how the makers of the eligible films celebrated this good news, we came across a tweet shared by Soorarai Pottru makers earlier today reading: “We are elated and thrilled!!! #SooraraiPottru joins OSCARS!!! (sic)”. Kalira Atita filmmaker Nila too had taken to the microblogging site to express his excitement.
