Music maestro AR Rahman’s mother Kareema Begum passes away

Another soul lost to the year 2020! Just when we start to think that 2020 could not steal more of more, we are presented with rather shocking news. In an unfortunate turn of events, Oscar and Grammy winner AR Rahman’s mother Kareema Begum has passed away in Chennai. Reports suggest that his mother succumbed to death due to ill-health.

The music composer took to his Twitter handle to confirm the news by sharing a picture of his mother. Even though AR Rahman has not accompanied any caption or quote with the shared picture, condolences for him and his family have started to pour in the comment section.

The music composer was closely-knit with his mother for she raised him by herself after her husband passed away when Rahman was just nine years old. AR Rahman’s father RK Shekhar was a music composer himself and worked mainly for Malayalam movies.

AR Rahman has spoken intensively about his mother at multiple interviews and has never fallen short of praising her. In an interview with ETimes, the music composer had shared that it was his mother who pushed him into music.  “She made me leave school in Class XI and take up music and it was her conviction that music is the line for me”, AR Rahman had shared.

In the said interview, AR Rahman has also revealed that he does not share a movie-like relationship with his mother. “We are not like a movie mother-son always hugging and she saying.. Mera Betaaa.. I have never hugged her in my life”, he added.
