MC College gang rape: Prime accused among 2 held

Police on Sunday morning arrested two accused including the prime suspect, in a case over Friday’s gang rape of a woman at MC College in Sylhet.

Prime accused Saifur Rahman, an activist of MC College unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), was arrested from Chhatak upazila of Sunamganj district while no 4 accused Arjun Laskar from bordering Montala area in Madhabpur of Habiganj.

Arjun is the son of Kanu Laskar of atgram of Jakiganj upazila.

Shahporan Police Station OC Abdul Quayyum confirmed the arrest of Saifur.

Earlier, the victim’s husband lodged a case with the police station at early hours of Saturday against nine persons including six BCL men.

On September 25, a young woman was gang raped allegedly by several BCL activists at MC College on Friday night while visiting there with her husband.

The BCL men forcibly took the couple to the college hostel at Tilagarh area at about 8:30pm, tying the husband and raped the wife, said the case statement.

Meanwhile, a three-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident.

Besides, two hostel guards– Rasel Mia and Sabuj Ahmed Ruhan– have been suspended for “negligence in duty.”
