Life imprisonment means jail until death: Appellate Division

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has released the full text of its verdict, saying that life imprisonment means jail sentence for rest of the life of the convict.

“According to Section 45 of the Penal Code, life imprisonment means imprisonment for rest of the life of the convict,” the Appellate Division said on Sunday releasing the full text of its verdict.

According to Section 57 of the Penal Code, in calculating fractions of terms of punishment, imprisonment for life shall be reckoned as equivalent to rigorous imprisonment for thirty years.

On September 30 last, an Appellate Division bench led by Justice Iman Ali reduced the punishment of murder convict Moksed Ali from death sentence to life imprisonment.
