Canada pledges $272.1m for development in Bangladesh, Indo-Pacific amid USAID cuts
Canada has announced $272.1 million for development projects in Bangladesh and the broader Indo-Pacific region amid major funding cuts by the Trump administration,
Canadian Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen, alongside Member of Parliament Parm Bains, made the announcement, according to a statement from Global Affairs Canada yesterday.
However, it remains unclear how much of the total fund is allocated specifically for Bangladesh.
The funding, announced during Hussen’s meeting with the Bangladeshi community in Vancouver, underscored Canada’s commitment to sustainable development and international cooperation.
“During my recent visit to Bangladesh, I witnessed Canada’s support in action through projects that provide vital humanitarian aid and essential healthcare for new mothers,” Hussen said in the statement.
He reiterated Canada’s commitment to strengthening ties with Bangladesh and the Indo-Pacific, highlighting efforts in healthcare, women’s empowerment, and climate action.
The Global Affairs Canada stated that the support will prioritise gender equality, sexual and reproductive health rights, and improved access to inclusive education and workforce training.
“These initiatives reflect Canada’s core values, as outlined in its Feminist International Assistance Policy, which seeks to empower women and girls globally,” the statement added.
Canada’s aid will also support climate action through nature-based solutions, green innovations, and enhanced disaster preparedness. The projects aim to improve living standards across the Indo-Pacific and contribute to global poverty reduction.
The funding aligns with Canada’s commitment to advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, fostering inclusion, and strengthening international partnerships.
Meanwhile, the US government has terminated nearly 100 USAID-supported projects in Bangladesh, valued at approximately $400 million, under the Trump administration’s new policy.
