The magistrate who got locked in an altercation with a female doctor has been transferred to Barishal from Dhaka.

Sheikh Md Mamunur Rashid, assistant commissioner and executive magistrate, has been transferred from Dhaka Deputy Commissioner’s office and placed under the Barishal Divisional Commissioner’s office.

Md Anisur Rahman Miah, additional secretary of the Appointment, Promotion and Deputation Wing of the Ministry of Public Administartion, said on Thursday night that Sheikh Md Mamunur Rashid was transferred to Barishal Divisional Commissioner’s office.

A video showing the altercation between magistrate-police and a female physician at Elephant Road police checkpost in the capital in the afternoon on April 18 went viral on Facebook, triggering criticism. The altercation happened when police wanted to see the identity card of the female physcian.

The female physician was Dr Saida Shawkat Jenny, associate professor of the Department of Radiology and Imaging at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), while the executive magistrate was Sheikh Mamunur Rashid who was performing duties in cooperation with New Market police at that time.

The 5.26 minute long video showed that the woman was telling police, “How many doctors die in coronavirus, and how many of you (police) have died? Now, you want to see movement pass from me.”

The sitaution went beyond control just after the remark. A policeman asked the doctor, “Why are you rebuking us?’

In response, the BSMMU professor Dr. Jenny said, “My father is a freedom fighter. I am the daughter of a Bir Bikram. Shawkat Ali is a Bir Bikram.”

Then the magistrate also said, ‘Why are you threatening me?’ In response, Dr. Jenny said, “I’ll give it 100 times. You have become policemen because my father fought the war of liberation.”

The magistrate and New Market Police Station’s officer-in-charge SM Qayyum said they too were sons of freedom fighters and asked if that mattered in this situation.

The doctor then said, “Harassment of doctors must be stopped… must be stopped…”
