Rifat murder at Mohakhali: All life-term convicts acquitted

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has acquitted all the life-term convicts in Nurul Islam Rifat murder case.

Rifat was the younger brother of Channel 24 managing director AK Azad.

A five-member Appellate Division bench including Chief Justice Hasan Foyez Siddiqui passed the order on Wednesday (August 17).

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali and Advocate SM Shahjahan appeared for the convicts, while additional attorney general Sheikh Muhammad Murshed argued on behalf of the state.

The acquitted convicts were Shamsu Habib Bidyut, Ruman Curzon, Manik and Rasel Kabir.

Earlier, the Appellate Division passed an order in the case back in 2014. At that time, a three-member Appellate Division bench led by senio Justice SK Sinha delivered the verdict in the case. However, the convicts filed a review petition and the Appellate Division sent the case for appeal hearing.

On January 17, 1997, Rifat was called out of his residence to join an ifter. On the following day, his body was found on the rail line behind a hotel.

On January 18, Rifat’s brother Md Ismail Hossain filed a case with Cantonment Police Station in Dhaka accusing eight people. Police submitted chargesheet against eight persons on January 7 of the following year.
