Leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has called for immediate resignation of the government from power and hold the next general election under a neutral election-time government.

Addressing a rally at Nayapaltan in the capital on Thursday afternoon, they threatened to launch a vigorous movement to unseat the present Awami League government from power. “If the government doesn’t pay any heed to their demand, they said they would launch an anti-government movement occupying the streets,” they said.

The rally was organised by BNP in protest against the recent fuel oil price hike by the government.

Speaking at the rally, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called upon all to join the movement of occupying the streets. “Time has come to occupy the roads and streets. The solution will come from here,” he said.

However, the BNP leader ruled out the possibility of announcing any programme like hartal or siege.

“We don’t consider any programme like hartal or siege. Rather, we are thinking about the programmes, in which, people from all walks of life can be involved,” he said.

Hundreds of leaders and workers of BNP from different parts of the capital and districts around the capital joined the rally organised at the BNP central office premises at Nayapaltan.
