Some 1.06 crore of mobile phone users left Dhaka until May 15 after the exodus began on May 4 despite strict restriction on movement to curb the spread of Covid-19 infections, according to data of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

Officials of four mobile phone operators and BTRC said the number of mobile phone subscribers indicates how many people left for home to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr.

However, this is not an actual estimate as many people have more than one SIM while many, for example, children, do not have any SIM.

Of the subscribers who left Dhaka, 66.39 lakh use Grameenphone, 19.50 lakh Robi, 15.96 lakh Banglalink and 4.59 lakh Teletalk, BTRC data shows.
