MC College gang-rape: High Court orders judicial probe

The High Court on Tuesday ordered judicial judicial investigation into the gang-rape of a housewife allegedly by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.at Murari Chand (MC) College hostel in Sylhet city.

The court also issued a ruling asking why action should not be taken against the college principal and the hostel superintendent, expressing dissatisfaction over their roles.

It also formed a committee for a judicial investigation into the rape of the woman. The committee includes the judge of Sylhet Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, the chief metropolitan magistrate, and an additional deputy commissioner. The committee comprising Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Justice Mohiuddin Shamim ordered to submit its report in 15 days.

The High Court ordered the Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner to ensure security of the members of the committee, while the deputy commissioner will provide the committee with necessary equipment.

The judges passed the orders after lawyer Muhammad Misbah Uddin brought the media reports on the rape to the court’s attention.

It is alleged that on Friday afternoon, a couple from South Surma in Sylhet went to visit MC College. Five to six Chhatra League leaders and activists grabbed them and took them to the dormitory, and beat them up both. Later, they tied her husband and raped her in front of him.

The next day, the victim’s husband filed a case against nine people at the city’s Shah Paran Police Station, naming six people. All the six accused are Bangladesh Chhatra League activists.

The victim is currently admitted to the OCC Centre of Osmani Hospital in Sylhet.

The accused in the case filed by the young woman’s husband are: Tarequl Islam Tarek, 28, son of Rafiqul Islam of Umednagar in Sunamganj Sadar Upazila; Mahbubur Rahman Rony, 25, son of Jahangir Mia of Begunipara in Habiganj Sadar; Arjun Laskar, 25, son of Kanu Laskar of Atgram in Zakiganj; Rabiul Islam, 25, of Barangadipur (Jagdal) village of Diraiupazila and Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, of Gachbari village of Kanaighat.

Meanwhile, on Monday and Tuesday, a Sylhet court remanded six accused in the case for five days.
