50,000 law enforcers deployed in city for Feb 1 polls

Election Commission (EC) has deployed a total of 50,000 law enforcers to ensure peaceful city corporation elections to be held on February 1.

“A total of 50,000 law enforcers have been deployed for maintaining law and order during the polls to Dhaka South and Dhaka North city corporations. Police and Ansar are discharging their duties at the polling centres while members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Navy personnel remain vigilant in the electoral areas,” EC sources said today.

The law enforcers will ensure security at all 2,4,86 voting centres in the city, of which 1,597 are risky.

As many as 16 law enforcers are patrolling each polling station while 18 remain watchful in risky polling stations. The patrolling lawmen include four policemen, two armed Ansar members and 10 more Ansar-VDP members.

The law enforcement agencies along with judicial magistrates – 27 for Dhaka North and 37 for Dhaka South – are on duty from today (two days before the polling day) to February 3 (two days after the polling day).

Besides, 54 executive magistrates for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 75 for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) will discharge their duties in this regard.
