At least 12 people were killed and 34 others injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in the southern Indian state of Telangana today, according to Telangana Health Minister Damodara Raja Narasimha.

“As many as 12 people died and 34 people were injured who are undergoing treatment,” the minister told reporters after visiting the site of the accident.

The blast occurred at a reactor inside the Sigachi Pharma company’s plant, located in the Pashamylaram industrial estate, reportedly due to a suspected chemical reaction that also triggered a fire.

Inspector General of Police V Satyanarayana, who is the chief of police of multiple southern Indian states, said around 150 people were present at the factory at the time of the explosion.

Of them, 90 were in the same section where the blast took place.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced compensation for the victims.
